It was a hard decision to join the military in the middle of an ongoing war. Especially since Ben and Lex had just left for Afghanistan - but I knew Zach would be an amazing military man (and beat Ben’s sharpshooting score).
Zach finished Basic Training last week. By the end of the month he will finish his MP training in Missouri and my fam are all excited to make the trip to embarrass him at his graduation.
He is incredibly hard working - he somehow ran his ten mile ruck trek on a broken foot and all he had to say was “yeah - I guess it hurts”. I know he will make this country proud and go on to do amazing things in or out of the military.
Somehow he survived High School living only on grilled cheese and frozen chicken nuggets. Next to that - the Army is no match. Thanks for everything dude!
2 years ago my sister traded in her V-Secret sweatpants and Cheerleading uniform for a different kind of uniform. You know - the one designed for surviving in war conditions-slightly different than the one designed specifically for making your butt look good.
I was so nervous at the time that her sweet, loving, forgiving and overwhelmingly compassionate heart would be lost between the screaming and push-ups. A few weeks ago while serving as a medic on the front lines in Afghanistan she received the “Medal of Compassion“…
I’m pretty sure Army made that up just for her.
She has survived UNTHINKABLE prejudice and abuse in the Army. She is stronger than surviving war. She has survived as a woman and as an individual. This is something that should be celebrated.
I celebrate every time she takes time to send me cute dresses she wants to buy and every time she talks about how she wants to raise a family. Through it all she has held onto Sexy Lexi.
I can’t wait for you to be home! In the meantime - THANK YOU.
People always comment on my brother’s name. “Benjamin - ooooh, that’s a strong name”
To which I respond “I know- I grew up wrestling with him”
My brother is the epitome of strength, honesty and love. If Jack Bauer watched more BRAVO TV. That’s my brother. Strong and loyal, but with a soft side.
I am so glad he is leading the teams that protect this country. It’s the only reason I can sleep at night. Knowing that there is someone in the military with a rational sense of right/wrong and the courage to speak out to protect those things. He has sacrificed time with his family to protect us. After a full tour in Iraq (that brought him home with a purple heart) and 1 more month to go in Afghanistan I can’t explain how proud I am (yes, I’m crying right now- don’t laugh at me).
God Bless you Ben. Can’t wait to see you, just in time for Christmas presents!
Shopping at a new grocery store feels like an awkward one-night stand. I should know where everything is. They have all of the same things in the same places (for the most part). But i still find myself fumbling around- doing things twice that I know I shouldn’t. Going down the same aisle 2 or 3 times and eventually walking out without actually getting any of the things I needed…
How did hipsters become so uncool? -
but sometimes it’s worth taking the leap… usually not.
